Özet
This article offers a comparative reading of Weber and Gramsci’s work with the aim of revealing the intellectual continuity of the sociological tradition beyond Cold War biases deeply ingrained in sociological theory. These biases severely impede the explanatory power of sociological thinking by imposing an artificial dichotomy between Marxism’s alleged crude materialism and Weberian sociology’s so-called idealism. The present article thus examines the much-overlooked Weberian influences on Gramsci’s Marxist theory as well as Weber and Gramsci’s shared conceptual foundations to argue that both names are part of a single intellectual tradition. They were preoccupied with the dynamics of social change premised on a strong political-economic and social-class background. Meanwhile, Weber and Gramsci strongly rejected economic reductionism and devoted their efforts to understanding the subjective determinants of social change. They provided a comprehensive conceptual map for the future development of political sociology based on a profound critique of capitalist society.
