Öğe Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils obtained from inula germanica l.(ACG publications, 2024) Güleç, Meltem; Yazıcı-Tütüniş, Seçil; İşçan, Gökalp; Demirci, Betül; Tan, Emir; Miski, Mahmut; Tan, NurThe genus Inula (Asteraceae), consisting of over 100 species predominantly found in Asia, Europe, and Africa, is recognized for its antimicrobial properties. This study explores the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of Inula germanica L. through conventional (T) and modified (M1, M2) hydrodistillation methods. Using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the conventional method (T) yielded alpha-bisabolol (30.1%) and 12-carboxyeudesma-3,11(13)-diene (14.9%) as major compounds. The modified method fraction M1 enriched monoterpenes such as trans-verbenol (9.5%), 1,8-cineole (9.5%), and cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (9.3%), whereas M2 was characterized by higher levels of sesquiterpenes like 12-carboxyeudesma-3,11(13)-diene (24.3%) and alpha-bisabolol (11.7%). The essential oils exhibited moderate to weak antimicrobial activity against tested bacterial and Candida strains, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 125 to 2000 mu g/mL. Among all studied samples, M1 showed the best antimicrobial activity against Candida strains in the MIC range of 125-500 mu g/mL.Öğe Synthesis, characterization, in vitro cytotoxicity of novel metallo phthalocyanines with four methylpropiophenonyl clusters and their effects on caenorhabditis elegans thermotolerance(SPRINGER INT PUBL AG, 2022) Şenoğlu, Sema; Güleç, Meltem; Yavuz Dokgöz, Elif; Bal Öztürk, Ayça; İzbudak, Burçin; Salih, Bekir; Olgun, Abdullah; Ceyhan, TanjuPhthalocyanines (Pcs) have the potential to be used in many medical applications. Novel Zn (II), Co (II), and Cu (II) phthalocyanines (Pcs) 4, 5, and 6, respectively, containing four methylpropiophenonyl units at the peripheral positions were described. Pcs were synthesized by cyclotetramerization of the previously prepared precursor 2-hydroxy-4'-[2-(3,4-dicyanophenoxyethoxy)]-2-methylpropiophenone 3 with the presence of metal salts under nitrogen atmosphere. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR (Infrared spectroscopy), UV-visible spectroscopy, and Laser Desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (LDI-TOF-MS) methods. The compounds were tested for in vitro cytotoxicity in cultured human cells, and thermotolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Standard MTT assays were carried out for cytotoxicity testing using HeLa and L929 cells. Results showed that there was no significant decrease in the cell viability with zinc (II), cobalt (II), and copper (II) phthalocyanines (ZnPc, CoPc, and CuPc) at 0.25 mu M concentration. C. elegans survival assay with ZnPc, CoPc, and CuPc under heat stress showed that although a dose-dependent statistically significant toxicity was observed for ZnPc and CuPc, CoPc was not toxic at all concentrations tested and even increased the survival of worms at the 0.050-0.250 mu M concentration range. Therefore, CoPc can be a lead compound for further preclinical studies for its potential in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and anti-aging purposes.Öğe The usage of the most frequently preferred herbal products in Turkey in nursing mothers, newborns, infants and children(Istanbul Univ, Fac Pharmacy, 2017) Güleç, Meltem; Tan, Nur; Canverdi, Özge; Tan, EmirThis study was conducted to identify the most frequently used herbal products available in the pharmacies for the healthcare of nursing mothers newborns, infants and children and to compare their efficacy and the safety of some herbal ingredients in comparison with those reported in the literature. Today, mothers visit the pharmacies with several complaints for themselves and their children. Although these complaints may appear simple at the first glance, they are of importance due to their frequency among people. In this context, herbal medications and chemical agents are being used for the treatment of such complaints. The most frequent problem of nursing mothers seems to be hypogalactia according to the interviews conducted with the pharmacists of 40 pharmacies from several municipalities of Istanbul and Ankara for this study. Pharmacies have several herbal medicines or medicinal teas that are being used for their galactagogue effect. On the other hand, the problems encountered in children generally include lack of appetite, cold, colic, insomnia, and weakness of the immune system. Therefore, herbal remedies and medicinal teas that used as dietary supplements, immune system strengtheners, anti-cold and anti-colic agents are preferably recommended by the pharmacists for the relief of these problems. In addition, externally used herbal preparations are also involved in the composition of various anti-rash creams or lotions, foam shampoos, hair and body shampoos, baby oil and lotions, and bath oils. Notably, these herbal preparations may not be as harmless as they are considered; therefore, their usage should be more conscious particularly in these special patient groups.
